This weekend was
quite unforgettable because of your participation. Many alliances were
formed that will help to insure a future for turtles. Much more work
still needs to be done. Please continue your efforts to help these
wonderful creatures. Please watch this website for future events and
announcements. For those of you interested
in some of our upcoming trips with Peter Pritchard and the other speakers,
please keep in touch with me via email. I really feel lucky to have been
in the presence of such a wonderful group of people this weekend. I
consider you all my friends!
This
is THE turtle and tortoise event of 2003! Attendees will go on a field
trip to see the Pacific Pond turtle in the Topanga Canyon study area, and
mingle with the speakers and turtle people from around the country at the
Ice-Breaker to be held at Turtle Dreams in Santa Barbara on Friday, hear from
some of the world’s top authorities on turtles all day on Saturday, have the
option to attend an evening dinner banquet featuring a special presentation to
be given by none other than Peter Pritchard later Saturday night, and see the
Largest turtle exhibit on the west coast along with some helpful workshops on
Sunday!!!!

WE WILL THEN HEAD TO TURTLE DREAMS, 2298 FEATHERHILL RD,
SUMMERLAND, CA AT 3PM AND ARRIVE AROUND 5PM FOR THE ICE-BREAKER.

Please send in your registration
forms NO LATER THAN August 29, 2003. After that date, you will have to
register in person. You may register in person
On either Friday 9/5/03 at the Ice-Breaker,
or Saturday 9/6/03 between 8AM and 9AM.
For those attending the field trip
and Ice-Breaker, you can hop on one of the complimentary vans at the Carson
Hilton by 10:00AM on Friday 9/5/03.
We will return to the Hilton
around 9:00PM. Otherwise, those wishing to drive in their own cars can do
so. We will provide the addresses for both
Locations on
this website in a few days. We will
stop along the way for fast food at lunch time before we reach the Topanga Pond
turtle site. You
May bring a sack
lunch if you prefer. The day should
go as follows: 10:00AM leave the Hilton, 11:30 Lunch along the way, 12:00
arrive at Topanga,
12-3:30PM observe study site and
see turtles and work with Rosi Dagit,
3:30PM leave for Turtle Dreams, 5:00 arrive at Turtle
Dreams, 5-7:30PM
visit Turtle Dreams and Complimentary Pizza, Sandwiches, Chips,
Soda, Beer, Wine, etc…, 7:30 depart for Carson Hilton, 9:00PM arrive at Hilton.
Once again, you can jump on the
van, even if unregistered, and then register when we arrive at Turtle Dreams on
Friday, or if not attending on Friday,
You can register in person on
Saturday morning from 8-9AM. Those who have registered in advance will
simply need to check in to get their
Symposium
materials.
Saturday will be a busy day.
We have a tight schedule to get all those great presentations in on 1
day! A continental breakfast will be served on
Saturday morning
from 8-9AM. Peter Pritchard will
open the event at approximately 9:00AM. Lunch is at noon and only will
last for 45 minutes.
We will conclude the presentations
at 4:15PM. Thereafter, you will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to relax,
refresh, nap, etc… before the dinner
Banquet. At 6:00PM dinner will be served at the Carson Hilton
which is located across the parking lot from the
London Broil
is on the menu for dinner. Vegetarians please email me so I can have your
dinners
Set up correctly. We will
eat and then see a wonderful special presentation by Peter Pritchard. The
banquet will conclude at 8:30PM. After
Dinner, we will lounge around and
talk in the Lounge at the Carson Hilton. This will be open until about
2AM for the adventurous.

Sunday will be the California
Turtle and Tortoise Club – Tri Chapter Annual Show at the
Symposium will be admitted free of
charge. This is a wonderful event with lots of turtles that you will not
want to miss. There will be
Some interesting workshops on
captive husbandry, and many other subjects as
well. This will take place from 9AM to 4PM.
Hear from well-respected
authorities in various fields of private and public research on turtles and
tortoises. Talented researchers and private individuals from all over the
Dr. Peter C.H. Pritchard – Author of numerous books and articles on turtles
and tortoises. Dr. Pritchard is known the world over for his Encyclopedia
of Turtles and his travels around the world.
Robert Zappalorti – Best known as the author of The Amateur
Zoologist’s Guide to Turtles and Crocodilians,
Robert has spent over 30 years studying the turtles of the northern
George L. Heinrich – A field biologist and environmental educator
specializing in
James Harding – From
Kristin Berry – Dr.
Rosi Dagit – Sr. Conservation Biologist, Resource Conservation
District of
David Germano – An authority on the Pacific Pond turtle, David has
published numerous papers and continues to study our native aquatic
turtle. We can learn a lot from his amazing observations in the field.
Kimberly Stone – Has important data on sea turtles that was acquired
while working at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Kim will bring sea turtle
information that is current and interesting.
Norman Scott – Has many years of experience studying the Pacific
Pond Turtle.
